The Golubac Museum
About the Golubac Museum

The cultural institution, Golubac Museum, was founded in 2024 to preserve, interpret, and
present the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Golubac area. As a place where the past
meets contemporary life in the local community, the museum aims to bring history closer to all
generations by collecting, protecting, and exhibiting archaeological, ethnological, and historical
material, as well as by cooperating with schools, scientific institutions, and associations.
The museum’s permanent exhibition, entitled “A Walk Through the History of Golubac”, leads
visitors through the chronology of this Danube region. The exhibited items date from prehistory
and antiquity, through the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period, to modern history. The
exhibition includes archaeological finds, historical documents, weapons, tools, ethnological
exhibits, and everyday objects that testify to the development of Golubac and its surroundings.

The building that houses the museum was erected in 1893 as the family home of merchant
Vićentije Nedeljković, and it is an important heritage site in its own right. Today, after
comprehensive adaptation, it has become the new cultural centre of Golubac – a place of
dialogue, education, and encounters with heritage.
The museum is open to all visitors and offers guided tours. Every visit offers an opportunity to
discover the rich past of the Golubac region and to experience this Danube town in yet another
special way.
The European Union donated more than EUR 170,000 toward the building’s adaptation. The
project was implemented through the EU PRO Plus programme, in cooperation with the Ministry of European Integration.
This project is part of the broader EU support to the municipality of Golubac, within which other significant investments have been made to restore the Golubac Fortress, the town square, sports grounds, and the tourist information centre, with a total value of several million euros.
The first permanent exhibition, realised in cooperation with the National Museum in Požarevac,
presents archaeological, historical, and ethnographic exhibits, offering visitors a comprehensive
insight into the long and layered past of Golubac.

Restoration Project

The project to repurpose a historically significant building in Golubac into the Town Museum
was implemented to address the growing number of tourists in Golubac, which in recent years
has reached several hundred thousand annually, primarily owing to the reconstructed Golubac
Fortress. By establishing the museum, the town gained a new public service intended for
residents, schools, and tourists – a space where cultural and historical artefacts are presented and
the heritage of the entire region is promoted.
Total project value: EUR 200.535
EU financing: EUR 170.454
Co-financing: EUR 30.081
With the opening of the Museum in Golubac, the conditions have been created for the long-term
protection of this cultural asset, the improvement of public cultural services, and the
strengthening of the tourist offering in Golubac, which is now becoming an increasingly
significant cultural and historical destination on the Danube.
